Obviously this is a workaround but I don't want to have to disconnect my MBA from my docking set up every time I want to restart my computer with the lid open just so I can login, close the lid, and then use the external display. I can then login, close the lid, and reconnect the USB adapter, and the external display lights up perfectly.

If I disconnect the USB adapter and open the lid, the login screen appears on the internal display (just like it should). Now when I restart in clamshell mode, the external display remains black and doesn't start up. I've installed the latest driver from j5Create (Catalina compatible), and I've given the necessary System Preferences permission (requires permission for screen recording). Since upgrading to Catalina yesterday, that's no longer true. In Mojave, before the update to Catalina, I could restart the Mac in clamshell mode with no problems, the display would fire right up to the progress bar as if it were the internal display.

I'm running a 2015 MBA in clamshell mode, using a j5Create JUA-311 USB 3 to VGA adapter to drive an external display.
